HOUSE BILL 2545 (NATIONAL BOARD OF PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS CERTIFICATION)

Sponsors:   Delegates Pasdon, Duke, Perry and Moye

Attorney:    McO   / Assistant:

Date:           February 19, 2015

Title:           OK

Fiscal Note:          Yes

Code:          §18A-4-2a (amend)

Purpose: The bill would revise the standards for determining when teachers complete a particular certification process. Under current law, teachers who pursue certification from National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) are reimbursed by the State Department of Education for the cost of their initial certification. One half is reimbursed upon enrollment in the certification program, and one half upon completion. Currently the teacher proves “completion” by demonstrating “completion of ten scorable entries as verified by the” NBPTS. The bill changes the manner in which the teacher proves “completion” to submission of “satisfactory evidence (to the Department) of completion.”

COMMITTEE ACTION: The bill was reported without amendment.
